Guided Trek Packages
Most climbers book an all-inclusive guided trek. A 5-day Sirimon–Chogoria Traverse package typically costs: Kenyan Residents: KES 35,000–55,000 ($250–400). International Non-Residents: $800–$1,500 per person. These prices include: guide, porters, cook, park fees, meals, camping equipment, and gate transfers. Premium packages (private guide, banda accommodation) cost 20–30% more.
KWS Park Fees
KWS park fees are the single largest fixed cost: Kenyan Citizens: KES 1,500/day ($11). Kenya Residents: KES 2,500/day ($18). East African Community: USD 25/day. Non-Residents: USD 52/day ($52). For a 5-day trek, non-residents pay $260 in park fees alone. Citizens pay just $55. This is why Mt Kenya is such incredible value for local climbers.
What's NOT Included
Most packages exclude: travel insurance (required, $30–100), tips for guides and porters ($50–100 total recommended), personal gear purchases, accommodation before/after the trek, and transport from your home city to the trailhead. International visitors should also budget for Kenya eTA ($30) and any vaccinations.
Budget vs Premium
Budget option ($600–800): Join a group trek, camp at all stops, basic meals. Great value, authentic experience. Standard option ($800–1,200): Private guide, quality camping, good meals, banda at Old Moses. Premium option ($1,200–2,000+): Private guide, banda at all stops, premium meals, porter-carried equipment, pre-trek hotel night in Nanyuki.
