Why Tipping Matters
Mountain guides and porters on Mount Kenya earn modest base wages. Tips represent a significant portion of their income and are the primary way climbers show appreciation for their hard work. Tipping is not mandatory but is strongly expected and deeply appreciated. A good tip motivates excellent service and supports local families in the Mt Kenya region.
Standard Tip Rates
Lead Guide: $10–15 per day per group (not per person), or $50–75 for a 5-day trek. Assistant Guide: $8–10 per day. Cook: $5–8 per day. Porters: $5–7 per day per porter. For a 5-day trek with one guide, one cook, and three porters, expect to tip $150–250 total. For group treks, the total tip is usually shared among the group members.
How and When to Tip
Tips are given on the last day, usually at the final campsite or at the gate before departure. Give tips in Kenyan Shillings (KES) — US dollars are also accepted but KES is preferred. Place tips in an envelope for each person, or give a lump sum to the head guide to distribute. Always tip each person individually if possible — it's more personal and ensures fair distribution.
Beyond Money
Some of the most appreciated 'tips' aren't cash: old hiking boots and clothing in good condition (porters can always use quality gear), headlamps and batteries, a genuine thank-you letter or online review naming your guide, and a photo together emailed after your trip. These personal touches mean as much as money.
